What students say after their first class

Hector Arana

I was that guy that thought yoga wasn't for me! I'm also happy to report I am injury free for the first time in 3 years and running better than ever.

Co-Founder, iRun & Company

Michael Ortiz

All of the 20 sequences were mindfully and intentionally put together to work off the energy of the day, so it gives real meaning and purpose to what you are doing.

Lauren Lipcon

The sequencing makes sense, your body will love it. Every class is different, it follows the energy of the Mayan calendar! It is fun, playful and empowering.

Camila Casale

Skanda is a breath-inspired practice that uses stretching, flexibility and strengthening to develop qualities such as will, perseverance and courage.

Is this your kind of room?

What Skanda Yoga Studio is

You do not need to be flexible, and you do not need to have done this before. That is what the Basics class is for.

A method, not a random workout

A method, not a random workout

Twenty set sequences, each with a stated intention and focus of action. You practise the same sequences again, which is the only way you actually see yourself getting better.

A community, not a studio selling hours

A community, not a studio selling hours

Students here are counted in years, not visits. Several of the people in the room have been practising at Skanda since before they knew what a vinyasa was.

A ladder you can actually climb

A ladder you can actually climb

Basics, then Levels 1, 2 and 3, then the 200hr and 300hr trainings. You always know what the next step is and when you are ready for it.

Eleven teachers, most of them made here

Between them: 25+ years of teaching in the method, a 40 year practitioner and IAYT yoga therapist, and several teachers who walked in as students with back pain and came up through Skanda's own trainings.

The basics

What is Skanda Yoga?

New to it? Here is the short version, with no prior knowledge required.

  • A breath led, alignment based power vinyasa

Physical enough to be genuinely hard, structured enough to be safe. Breath sets the pace, alignment sets the shape, and every posture has a reason for being where it is.

  • Twenty sequences, not a freestyle flow

There are 20 fixed sequences. Because they repeat, you can feel your own progress in a pose rather than guessing whether last week counted.

  • One intention for each day

Which sequence you practise is set by the daily oracle of the Mayan calendar, so every class arrives with a stated focus of action rather than a playlist.

  • A path that keeps going

Basics, then Levels 1, 2 and 3, then the Yoga Alliance registered 200hr and 300hr trainings. Most of the teachers here came up that exact way.

Skanda Yoga vs a standard drop-in class

In most studios the sequence changes because the teacher changed. Here it changes because the day changed, and the sequence is one of twenty you will come to know by name.

Start with Basics

Our classes

Classes run 60 to 90 minutes depending on the slot, and are taught in English and Spanish.

Skanda Yoga Basics

Start here. Genuinely.

The foundation class. You learn the postures, the breath and the vocabulary of the sequences at a pace that lets you ask questions. No experience assumed, and most of the teachers on this page started in this room.

Skanda Yoga Levels 1, 2 & 3

The ladder, one rung at a time.

The same 20 sequences at increasing depth and pace. Level 1 assumes you know the shapes, Level 3 assumes you know yourself in them. Your teacher will tell you when you are ready to move up.

Practitioner in a forearm-supported arm balance

Rocket & Power Vinyasa

Fast, playful, arm balances and all.

The most athletic classes on the timetable, built around inversions, arm balances and a strong continuous flow. Come here when you want the practice to be the hardest thing you do that day.

Gentle Therapeutics & Restorative

Props, bolsters and no hurry.

Slow, supported and prop led, working one major chakra at a time, with visualisation, mantra and aromatherapy throughout. Built for a stressful week rather than against it.

Sound Healing & Breathwork

The practice with nothing to perform.

Lie down, breathe, and let the sound do the work. The clearest entry point for anyone who wants the nervous-system side of yoga without the physical demand.

A student's story

The runner who thought yoga wasn't for him

Hector had been running for years and getting injured for three of them. Another runner told him to try Skanda. He was not convinced.

He started in the levelled classes and now practises three times a week, alongside running and running a shop. The injuries stopped.

I was that guy that thought yoga wasn't for me! I'm also happy to report I am injury free for the first time in 3 years and running better than ever.
